Hartbeespoort, often referred to by the informal name "Harties," is a small resort town located in the North West Province of South Africa. The town is situated on the slopes of the Magaliesberg mountain and along the banks of the Hartbeespoort Dam. Its name translates to "gateway of the hartbees" in Afrikaans.
The oldest neighborhood within the town is Schoemansville, which was named after General Hendrik Schoeman. Schoeman was a Boer General during the Anglo-Boer War who owned the farm where the Hartbeespoort Dam was eventually constructed.
