Thabazimbi is a town located in the Limpopo province of South Africa. It is situated at the foot of the Ysterberg and is surrounded by the Witfonteinrand and Boshofberg, with the Kransberg visible in the background. The name Thabazimbi translates to "mountain of iron," a reference to the large iron ore reef discovered there in 1919 by J. H. Williams.
The town was officially proclaimed in 1953 and developed as an iron mining hub following the arrival of a railway line from Rustenburg in the 1930s. This infrastructure allowed for full-scale production, with two million tonnes of ore once being hauled by train to Mittal's iron and steel works. The mine remained operational until 2015, when it closed due to a rock fall involving 65 million tons of rock.
Kumba Iron Ore, formerly known as Kumba Resources, currently serves as the principal operator of the iron ore mine in the region.
