Kuruman is a small town located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It is recognized for its distinct scenery and serves as a notable geographical landmark within the region. The area is often referred to as the "Oasis of the Kalahari" due to an unexpected swathe of green vegetation that appears amidst the surrounding barren plains.
The town's unique landscape is shaped by the Eye of Kuruman, a geological feature that brings water from deep underground. This abundance of water contrasts with the local environment, which includes the Kuruman River; the river remains dry except during flash floods following heavy rainfall. Historically, the site served as a mission station founded by Robert Moffat in 1821 for the London Missionary Society and was the location where David Livingstone began his first missionary position in 1841.
