Calvinia is a regional town located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It falls under the jurisdiction of the Hantam Local Municipality, which is part of the larger Namakwa District Municipality. The town is situated within the Great Karoo region and is positioned just south of the Hantam mountains along the banks of the Oorlogskloof River.
The settlement was named in honor of Jean Calvin, a prominent French religious reformer. It serves as a regional center within its district, characterized by its geographical placement in the arid landscape of the interior South African plateau.
