Standerton is a large commercial and agricultural town located in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. Situated on the banks of the Vaal River, the town serves as the seat of the Lekwa Local Municipality.
Established in 1876, the town was named after Boer leader Commandant Adriaan H. Stander, who was the original owner of the farm where the settlement was built. The area specializes in various agricultural activities, specifically cattle, dairy, maize, and poultry farming.
The town holds historical significance as a site during the First Boer War, where a British garrison was besieged by Boers for three months. Additionally, it is notable as the location where General Jan Smuts won his seat during elections before going on to assist in establishing the League of Nations.
