Driefontein refers to a mining site located in the West Witwatersrand Basin mining field in South Africa. The development of this specific area began with the discovery of the West Wits field in 1931 and the subsequent commencement of operations at the Venterspost Gold Mine in 1939.
The Driefontein site expanded through several stages, including the opening of the West Driefontein mine in 1952, the Kloof mine in 1968, and East Driefontein in 1972. Following a period of consolidation starting in 1981, Gold Fields took control of the combined East and West Driefontein mines in 1999.
In 2000, these operations were merged with the Venterspost, Libanon, Leuudoorn, and Kloof mines. This evolution culminated in 2010 with the formation of the current Kloof-Driefontein Complex, which comprises KDC East and KDC West.
