Soweto is a township located within the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in Gauteng, South Africa. It borders the city's mining belt to the south and serves as one of the primary suburbs of Johannesburg.
The name Soweto is an English syllabic abbreviation for South Western Townships. While it was formerly established as a separate municipality, it has been incorporated into the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality since 2002.
