Randfontein

South Africa

Randfontein is a gold mining town located in the West Rand region of Gauteng, South Africa. It is situated approximately 40 km (25 mi) west of Johannesburg.

The town was established in 1890 to serve the new mines following the Witwatersrand gold rush. Mining financier JB Robinson purchased the farm Randfontein and subsequently floated the Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company in 1889. While it was originally administered by Krugersdorp, Randfontein became an independent municipality in 1929.
