Krugersdorp is a mining city located in the West Rand region of Gauteng Province, South Africa. The town was founded in 1887 by Marthinus Pretorius and Abner Cohen following the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand, which created a demand for a major settlement to the west of the reef.
The government acquired a portion of the Paardekraal farm to establish the town, naming it after Paul Kruger, who served as the president of the Transvaal. While it historically functioned as an independent entity, Krugersdorp no longer has its own separate municipal government. It was integrated into the Mogale City Local Municipality and currently serves as the seat of government for that municipality.
