Graaff-Reinet, which is officially scheduled to be renamed Robert Sobukwe Town in February 2026, is a town located in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. It holds the distinction of being the oldest town in the province and ranks as the sixth oldest town in the country, following Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Simon's Town, Paarl, and Swellendam.
Historically, the town served as the center of a short-lived republic during the late 18th century before it was annexed into the Cape Colony. It is also noted for its role in the Great Trek, serving as a starting point for groups led by Gerrit Maritz and Piet Retief, and providing large numbers of Voortrekkers between 1835 and 1842.
