Adelaide is the capital and most populous city of South Australia, ranking as the fifth-most populous city in Australia. The name may refer to either Greater Adelaide or the specific city centre, with residents and the city itself referred to by the demonym Adelaidean. The traditional owners of the region are the Kaurna people, who refer to the city centre and surrounding Park Lands as Tarndanya.
The city is situated on the Adelaide Plains north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, positioned between the Gulf St Vincent to the west and the Mount Lofty Ranges to the east. Its metropolitan area covers more than 430 suburbs, spanning approximately 96 km from Gawler in the north to Sellicks Beach in the south, and extending 20 km from the western coast to the eastern foothills of the Mount Lofty Ranges.
