Harrismith is a large town situated in the Free State province of South Africa. The settlement was named in honor of Sir Harry Smith, who served as a British governor and high commissioner of the Cape Colony during the 19th century.
The town is located along the Wilge River and serves as an important crossroads for South Africa's land trade routes. It sits alongside the N3 highway, positioned approximately midway between Johannesburg to the north-west and Durban to the south-east. Additionally, it lies at the junction of the N5 highway, which leads westward toward the provincial capital of Bloemfontein.
Geographically, Harrismith is characterized by a landscape of mesas and buttes. It is specifically situated at the base of a prominent formation known as Platberg.
