Ficksburg is a town located in the Free State province of South Africa. It is situated at the foot of the 1,750-meter-high Imperani Mountain and lies on the north bank of the Mohokare River, which serves as the border separating it from the town of Maputsoe in Lesotho.
The town was named in 1867 after General Johan Fick, who won the territory during the Basotho Wars. Following the acquisition of the land, Fick established numerous erven and plots available for purchase at reasonable prices. Ficksburg was subsequently proclaimed a municipality in 1891.
