oThongathi, commonly known as Tongaat, is a town located in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. It is situated approximately 40 kilometres north of Durban and 28 kilometres south of KwaDukuza, forming part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality within the Greater Durban area.
The town is historically significant as the site of the oldest Indian community in South Africa, where the first indentured Indian laborers settled in 1860 to work on sugar-cane plantations. The local architecture features many buildings in the Cape Dutch style, much of which was designed by Ivan Mitford-Barberton.
