Kokstad is a town located in the Harry Gwala District Municipality of the KwaZulu-Natal Province in South Africa. It serves as the capital town of the East Griqualand region and is the largest town within that area.
The town was established by Adam Kok III, a Griqua chief who settled in the area in 1863. It was built around Mount Currie, a local mountain range, and takes its name from the founder. The suffix "stad" in the town's name is derived from the Dutch and Afrikaans words for "city."
