Durban is a major city located on the east coast of South Africa, situated on the Natal Bay of the Indian Ocean. It serves as the largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal and ranks as the third-most populous city in the country, following Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The city was formerly known as Port Natal and currently functions as the busiest port city in sub-Saharan Africa. Geographically, it is characterized by a flat city center situated north of the Umgeni River mouth, which rises toward the hills of the Berea to the west and extends toward the Bluff along the coast to the south.
