Asaga was a 9th-century Digambara Jain poet who composed literary works in both Sanskrit and Kannada. He is primarily recognized for his contributions to Sanskrit literature, having authored at least eight distinct works in the language.
He is most notable for writing the Vardhamana Charitra in 853 CE. This eighteen-canto epic poem serves as the earliest available Sanskrit biography of Mahavira, the last tirthankara of Jainism. While his Kannada writings, such as the Karnataka Kumarasambhava Kavya, have been referenced by later poets, no surviving copies of these works exist today.
