Machiques is a city located in the northwest portion of Venezuela within Zulia State. The municipality is situated near the national border with Colombia.
The primary economic activity in the Machiques region is cattle raising. The area is also notable for being the site of a major aviation disaster on August 16, 2005, when West Caribbean Airways Flight 708 crashed in a mountainous area of the municipality while traveling from Panama City to Fort-de-France.
