Cumaná is the capital city of Sucre State in Venezuela, situated approximately 402 kilometres (250 mi) east of the national capital, Caracas. It holds historical significance as one of the first cities founded by Spain on the mainland of the Americas and remains the oldest continuously inhabited Hispanic-established city in South America.
The early history of Cumaná was marked by resistance from indigenous people who attempted to prevent Spanish incursions into their territory, leading to the city being refounded several times. As of recent estimates, the municipality of Sucre, which encompasses the capital city, has a population of approximately 423,546.
