La Asunción is a city located in Venezuela and serves as the capital of Nueva Esparta state. It is situated on Margarita Island in the Caribbean Sea, off the South American mainland. The city sits within a fertile valley surrounded by green hills, approximately 6 miles (10 km) inland from the port of Porlamar.
Founded in 1565 by Captain Pedro González Cervantes de Albornoz, the city features an imposing backdrop provided by the Santa Rosa Castle, also known as the Santa Rosa Fort, which was constructed to protect the area. The most significant structures in La Asunción are centered around the Plaza Bolívar. Among these is the Catedral Nuestra Señora de La Asunción, a 16th-century church recognized as one of the earliest in the country.
The city is noted for having a cooler climate than its surrounding coastal areas. According to the 2011 census, La Asunción has a population of 28,513 people.
