Caripe is a town located within the Caripe Municipality in the mountainous northern region of Monagas state, situated in eastern Venezuela. It serves as a notable geographical point in the country's interior highlands.
The official name of the town is Caripe del Guácharo, which translates to "Caripe of the Oilbird." This designation refers to a colony of nocturnal birds that inhabit the nearby Cueva del Guácharo. The oilbird species remained unknown to science until 1799, when it was discovered by Alexander von Humboldt during his Latin American Expedition.
