Las Vegas, often referred to colloquially as Vegas, is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Nevada and serves as the county seat of Clark County. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 641,903, making it the 24th-most populous city in the United States. The surrounding metropolitan area is estimated to have 2.4 million residents.
The city is an internationally renowned major resort destination known for its nightlife, fine dining, shopping, entertainment, and gambling. Most of these primary venues are concentrated in downtown Las Vegas or along the Las Vegas Strip, which is situated outside the official city limits within the unincorporated towns of Paradise and Winchester. The Las Vegas Valley functions as the primary financial, commercial, and cultural hub for the state of Nevada.
