Termez is a district-level city located in southern Uzbekistan and serves as the capital of the Surxondaryo Region. As of 2021, the city has a population of approximately 182,800 residents.
The city is historically significant as the site of Alexander the Great's ancient city, Alexandria on the Oxus. It also served as an important center for early Buddhism and remains a destination for Muslim pilgrimage. Additionally, Termez functioned as a base for Soviet Union military operations in Afghanistan and provides access to the nearby Hairatan border crossing.
