Beruniy is a city located in the autonomous republic of Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan. It is situated on the northern bank of the Amu Darya river near the border with Turkmenistan and serves as the administrative seat of the Beruniy District.
Historically known as Kath, the city served as the capital of Khwarazm during the Afrighid dynasty. In 1957, it was renamed Beruniy to honor Al-Biruni, a medieval scholar and polymath who was born in the area. The settlement officially received city status in 1962.
