Urgench is a district-level city located in western Uzbekistan. It serves as the capital of the Xorazm Region and is situated along the Amu Darya River and the Shavat canal. The city is positioned approximately 450 km (280 mi) west of Bukhara, across the Kyzylkum Desert.
The population of Urgench was estimated at 145,000 in 2021, reflecting a growth from its 1999 figure of 139,100.
