Uruguay, officially known as the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, is a country located in the Southern Cone region of South America. It shares land borders with Argentina to the west and southwest, and Brazil to the north and northeast. To the south, it borders the Río de la Plata, while its southeastern coastline meets the Atlantic Ocean.
The nation covers an area of approximately 176,215 square kilometers (68,037 sq mi) and has a population of nearly 3.5 million people. A significant portion of the population resides in the metropolitan area of Montevideo, which serves as the country's capital and largest city.
