Montevideo is the capital and largest city of Uruguay, located in the Montevideo Department region. It is situated on the southern coast of the country along the northeastern bank of the Río de la Plata.
The city covers an area of 201 square kilometers (78 sq mi). According to the 2023 census, the city proper has a population of 1,287,452, which accounts for approximately 36.8% of Uruguay's total population.
