Juneau, officially known as the City and Borough of Juneau, is the capital of the U.S. state of Alaska. It is situated along the Gastineau Channel in Southeast Alaska.
The city was designated as the capital of Alaska in 1906, following a 1900 U.S. Congressional mandate to move the government from Sitka. On July 1, 1970, the City of Juneau merged with the City of Douglas and the surrounding Greater Juneau Borough to form the current consolidated city-borough.
Due to this merger, Juneau ranks as the second-largest municipality in the United States by area. Its total landmass is notably larger than both the states of Rhode Island and Delaware.
