Newport News is an independent city located in southeastern Virginia, United States. Situated at the southeastern end of the Virginia Peninsula, it lies on the northern shore of the James River leading toward the mouth of the harbor of Hampton Roads.
The city is part of the Hampton Roads region and ranks as the fifth-most populous city in Virginia. According to the 2020 census, Newport News had a population of 186,247, making it the 140th-most populous city in the United States.
