Charlottesville, colloquially known as C'ville, is an independent city located in Virginia, United States. It serves as the county seat of Albemarle County, although the two are distinct legal entities. The city was named in honor of Queen Charlotte and formerly served as the capital of the state of Virginia.
As of the 2020 census, Charlottesville had a population of 46,553. For statistical purposes, the Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city with Albemarle County for a total population of approximately 160,000. The city is the central hub of the Charlottesville metropolitan area, which encompasses Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, and Nelson counties.
