Vega is a prominent star located in the northern constellation of Lyra. It holds the Bayer designation α Lyrae, which is also referred to as Alpha Lyr or α Lyr.

The star is situated approximately 25 light-years from the Sun, making it relatively close to our Solar System. It is one of the most luminous stars in its neighborhood and is intrinsically brighter than any other star closer to the Sun. Vega ranks as the fifth-brightest star in the night sky and the second-brightest in the northern celestial hemisphere, following Arcturus.
