The Netherlands, also known informally as Holland, is a country located in Northwestern Europe with additional overseas territories in the Caribbean. It serves as the largest of the four constituent countries that make up the Kingdom of the Netherlands and is composed of twelve provinces and three overseas special municipalities.
Geographically, the European Netherlands shares land borders with Germany to the east and Belgium to the south, while maintaining a coastline to the north and west. It also shares maritime borders with the United Kingdom, Germany, and Belgium in the North Sea. The official language of the country is Dutch, though West Frisian serves as a secondary official language in the province of Friesland.
In its Caribbean territories, the official languages are Dutch, English, and Papiamento. People originating from the Netherlands are commonly referred to as Dutch.
