Ennis is the county town of County Clare, located in the mid-west region of Ireland. It is situated on the River Fergus, specifically north of the point where the river widens to enter the Shannon Estuary. As of the 2022 census, Ennis is the largest town in County Clare with a population of 27,923, ranking it as the 6th largest town and the 11th largest urban settlement in Ireland.
The town dates back to the 12th century. Its Irish name, which is shortened to Ennis, is derived from Inis Cluana Rámhfhada, meaning "Island of the long rowing meadow." This name refers to the town's geographical location situated between two courses of the River Fergus.
