The Wartburg is a medieval castle located in the state of Thuringia, Germany. Situated at an elevation of 410 metres (1,350 ft), it sits on a southwest-facing precipice overlooking the town of Eisenach to the north.
The site is historically significant as the home of St. Elisabeth of Hungary and the location where Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German. It served as the setting for the 1817 Wartburg festival and is the supposed location of the legendary Sängerkrieg. Additionally, the castle served as a primary inspiration for Ludwig II during the construction of Neuschwanstein Castle.
