Greeneville is an incorporated town and the county seat of Greene County, located in the state of Tennessee, United States. According to the 2020 census, the town had a population of 15,479 residents.
The town was named in honor of Nathanael Greene, a hero of the Revolutionary War. It holds the distinction of being the second oldest town in Tennessee and is the only town in the United States with this specific spelling, distinguishing it from various other locations named Greenville.
Historically, Greeneville served as the capital of the short-lived State of Franklin during the 18th century in East Tennessee.
