Saint George, also known as George of Lydda, was an early Christian martyr who is highly venerated in Christianity. Of Cappadocian Greek origin, he served as a soldier in the Roman army and became a member of the Praetorian Guard under Emperor Diocletian.
During the Diocletianic Persecution, George was sentenced to death for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. He is regarded as one of Christianity's most prominent heroes and megalomartyrs. Since the Crusades, he has been specifically honored as a military saint and remains respected by Christians, Druze, and some Muslims as a martyr of monotheistic faith.
