Levittown is a city located in the Pennsylvania region of the United States. It is one of three large suburban housing developments specifically named "Levittown," all of which were established by William J. Levitt and his company, Levitt & Sons.
Developed after World War II, these communities were designed to provide returning white veterans and their families with attractive alternatives to apartments or cramped central city locations. The projects were made possible through guarantees from the Veterans Administration and the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), which allowed qualified veterans to purchase housing at a fraction of typical rental costs.
A defining characteristic of Levittown housing under the management of Levitt & Sons was the inclusion of racial covenants. These legal restrictions were used to systematically exclude non-White individuals from purchasing homes within these developments.
