Indiana is a state located in the Midwestern region of the United States. It was admitted to the Union as the 19th state on December 11, 1816. The state is commonly referred to by the nickname "the Hoosier State."

Geographically, Indiana borders Lake Michigan to the northwest, Michigan to the north and northeast, Ohio to the east, Kentucky to the south and southeast, Illinois to the west, and the Ohio River and Wabash River. It ranks as the 38th-largest state by area and is the 17th-most populous of the 50 states. The capital and largest city in Indiana is Indianapolis.
