Haddington is a town located in East Lothian, Scotland, situated approximately 17 miles east of Edinburgh. The name of the settlement is derived from Anglo-Saxon origins, dating back to the sixth or seventh century AD when the area was incorporated into the Kingdom of Bernicia.
The region became part of Scotland in the tenth century after being ceded by Edgar, King of England. During the reign of David I (1124–1153), Haddington was granted burgh status as one of the earliest settlements to receive such a designation. This transition into a Royal Burgh provided the town with trading rights, which facilitated its development into a market town.
