Beavers are large semiaquatic rodents native to the Northern Hemisphere. There are two extant species: the North American beaver and the Eurasian beaver. As the second-largest living rodents after capybaras, they can weigh up to 50 kg (110 lb).
These mammals possess stout bodies characterized by large heads, long chisel-like incisors, and fur that is either brown or gray. Their anatomy includes hand-like front feet, webbed back feet, and flat, scaly tails. The two species are distinguished from one another by specific differences in their skull shape, tail shape, and fur color.
Beavers are herbivorous animals that inhabit various freshwater environments, including rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds. Their diet consists of tree bark, aquatic plants, grasses, and sedges.
