Back Mountain is a region and former census-designated place (CDP) located in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. Situated near the cities of Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, the area covers a total land area of 117.59 square miles (304.6 km2). As of 2016, the region had a population of 33,551.
The name "Back Mountain" describes the location of the area behind the mountain ridge that forms the northwest side of the Wyoming Valley. The region is composed of several independently governed municipalities, including the townships of Dallas, Franklin, Jackson, Kingston, Lake, and Lehman, as well as the boroughs of Dallas and Harveys Lake.
