Tahlequah is a city located in Cherokee County, Oklahoma, situated at the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. It is positioned within the Green Country region of the state.
The city was established in 1839 as the capital of the 19th-century Cherokee Nation. This development occurred as part of a new settlement in Indian Territory following the forced removal of Cherokee Native Americans from the American Southeast via the Trail of Tears.
