Hobart is the capital and most populous city of the Australian island state of Tasmania. Situated in the south-east of the state on the estuary of the River Derwent, it holds the distinction of being Australia's southernmost capital city.
While Hobart contains nearly half of Tasmania's population, it remains the least-populated Australian state capital and is the second-smallest by population and area when territories are included. The city features a mild maritime climate and a skyline dominated by kunanyi / Mount Wellington, which stands at 1,271 metres. Its harbour is noted as the second-deepest natural port in the world, with significant portions of its waterfront composed of reclaimed land.
The metropolitan area is commonly referred to as Greater Hobart to distinguish it from the City of Hobart, which is one of seven local government areas covering the city region.
