East Harlem is a neighborhood located in Upper Manhattan in New York City, United States. It is situated north of the Upper East Side and is bounded by 96th Street to the south, Fifth Avenue to the west, and the East and Harlem Rivers to the east and north.
The area is commonly known by several names, including Spanish Harlem or El Barrio, and was formerly referred to as Italian Harlem. While it is distinct from Harlem proper, it is officially recognized as one of the neighborhoods included in Greater Harlem.
