Delhi, officially known as the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, is a megacity and union territory located in India. It contains New Delhi, which serves as the capital of the country. The territory straddles the Yamuna River but is primarily situated to its west, sharing borders with the state of Uttar Pradesh to the east and the state of Haryana in the remaining directions.

The region became a union territory on November 1, 1956, and was designated as the National Capital Territory in 1995. Covering an area of 1,484 square kilometres (573 sq mi), the NCT had a population of approximately 16.8 million according to the 2011 census, while the city proper population exceeded 11 million.
