Binghamton is a city located in the Southern Tier region of New York State, near the Pennsylvania border. It serves as the county seat of Broome County and is situated in a bowl-shaped valley at the confluence of the Chenango and Susquehanna rivers, surrounded by rolling hills.

As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 47,969. It functions as the principal city of the Binghamton metropolitan area, which has a total population of approximately one quarter million people.
