Las Vegas, often referred to colloquially as Vegas, is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Nevada and serves as the county seat of Clark County. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 641,903, making it the 24th-most populous city in the United States. The surrounding metropolitan area is estimated to have 2.4 million residents and ranks as the 29th-largest metropolitan area in the country.
The city is an internationally renowned resort destination primarily known for its gambling, shopping, fine dining, nightlife, and entertainment. Most of these major venues are situated in downtown Las Vegas or along the Las Vegas Strip, which is located outside city limits within the unincorporated towns of Paradise and Winchester. Additionally, the Las Vegas Valley functions as the primary financial, commercial, and cultural center for the state of Nevada.
