Garfield is an American comic strip and media franchise created by Jim Davis. Originally published locally as Jon in 1976 before entering nationwide syndication in 1978, the series chronicles the lives of a lazy, gluttonous, and sarcastic cat named Garfield, his owner Jon Arbuckle, and a dim-witted dog named Odie.
The comic strip held the Guinness World Record for being the world's most widely syndicated comic strip as of 2013. While the setting is rarely mentioned in print, the television special Happy Birthday, Garfield identifies the characters' home as Muncie, Indiana, which is the hometown of creator Jim Davis.
