The city serves as the principal hub of the Hattiesburg Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Covington, Forrest, Lamar, and Perry counties. As the anchor of the Pine Belt region, it is the fifth most populous city in Mississippi, with a population of 48,730 recorded in 2020.
