Palmyra is an ancient city located in central Syria within the eastern part of the Levant. Archaeological evidence indicates that human activity and finds in the area date back as far as the Neolithic period, though the city was first formally mentioned in documents during the early second millennium BCE.
Throughout its history, Palmyra changed hands between various different empires. It eventually became a subject of the Roman Empire during the first century CE.
